The
Carinia label has been in Aurtalia since the early 1950s issuing 78s with
music from far flung places. The
45s came in around 1960 and kept going well into the 1980s. Carinia
was an Independent company Melbourne based with their own distribution
and operated in a similar manner to Sydney based “Minstrel” set up catering
for European popular music from labels such as Telefunken (Germany) Elite
Special (Switzerland) Ricordi (Italy) among others. During the 1970s, if
you were a lover of Hammond Organ or Accordion music, you were very well
catered for. There must have been 20 volumes of Hammond Pops albums alone. Availability
of 45s were limited as they seemed to be restricted to specialty stores
and not in general record bars. Also the label went dormant a couple of
times, possibly owing to the general lack of interest in foreign music
with the general record buying public.
