Coronet
Records was an Australian label set up in order to release material from
US Columbia owing to the fact the US Columbia could not use their name
because of the arrangement with the UK (EMI) label. Prior to Coronet records,
US Columbia material were issued on Philips Records. Between 1956 and 1958
Coronet records were consecutively issued as 78’s and 45’s. The records
were manufactured by Australian Record Company (ARC) in Sydney and distributed
by G. J. Aitken (a subsidiary of ARC). An added selling point of the label
was its unique octagonal label, reputed to be the only one in the world
at the time, and its distinctive bright green colour. (78’s were red, EP’s
brown). Not only did Coronet issue US products. From the early 60’s they
started recording local acts in their new recording studios in Sydney.
In january 1963, the Coronet label completely disappeared and was replaced by CBS Records. |
