Festival Records was founded in Sydney in 1952 by an Australian army commander Paul Cullen who hired 2 of his army buddies, John Delhunty and Cyril Beavis to set it up, also hiring Les Welch as it’s A&R man. Between them they started what was to become a major label in Australia beside EMI & CBS.
In 1957, Festival was sold to property & investment Manager, L.J.Hooker. Festival apart from recording local talent, was a distributor label owning the rights for the American Decca label as well as Atlantic, Coral, Brunswick among others, as well as a stable of Australian Independent labels.
Festival lasted until 2005 when it went bust and later taken over by Mushroom Music.
The earliest 45 rpm issued was an EP - XP45 447 in January 1955 (see below).
The very first 45 rpm SINGLE issued was SP45 678 in July 1955.
