One
of four independent labels formed by UK producer, photographer Miles Copeland
along with Step Forward, Deptford Fun City Records & Total Noise at
the start of the Punk Movement. It was this small label, and the other
three under the Faulty Products Group, that was a precursor to US
I.R.S. Records. Illegal's first issue was Fall Out / Nothing Achieving
by The Police. Copeland knew his brother's band needed a world-wide distributor
- and help inked with A&M Records. It was through the connections Copeland
made with A&M's Jerry Moss that lead to the US distrbution deal for
his I.R.S. Records venture. Unlike Copeland's other punk era labels
that were closed or folded into I.R.S., the Illegal Records moniker was
left open to distribute I.R.S. releases.
ES 1098 and ES 1139 alo issued on the I.R.S. label. |
