After
late 1970s success with UK labels Faulty Products, Step Forward, Illegal
Records and Deptford Fun City Records, founder Miles Copeland III brought
his indie label concept to the American shores. After inking the The Police's
deal with Jerry Moss of A&M Records in 1978, Copeland found for himself
a world-wide distributor for his newest and most successful venture: I.R.S.
Records - which he founded the following year.
Originally, the concept was to establish I.R.S. as an independent label conglomeration with distribution and marketing performed by a major label. The ball really began to roll for I.R.S. in 1980. After signing the Buzzcocks the year prior, deals were inked with Go-Go's, Oingo Boingo and the Dead Kennedys. With the need for more autonomy and friction with A&M, I.R.S. and its conglomerate operations sought out a new distribution deal, one it found with MCA Records in 1985. Some earlier I.R.S. recordings were issued on lllegal Records in Australia. |
