A
label well known to jazz collectors going back to the 78 days. The label
seems to have been around since the 1950’s, although the 45’s didn’t really
surface until the 60’s.The label had 3 parts to it:
1.
The local series, based in Melbourne aligned with Crest Records as an independent
label pressed and distributed their own records.
2.
The International series, mostly distributing popular Italian music via
“Italian” furniture shops and book & record stores which served the
Italian community, also items from elsewhere such as Sweden (Sonet).
3.
Material from its French parent company VOGUE Records the most popular
being “Only You Can Do It” – Francoise Hardy made No.1 in Melbourne in
1966, which was the first time most of us saw this label.
The
labels were distributed by Sound & Film Industries (Melbourne) a.k.a.
Crest until the late 60’s when Festival took it over. |
