Rex Records reflected the name of the hotel chain Rex Hotels. Three of them were Wiley Park (still exists under different name), St Mary's (ditto) and Kings Cross. This chain of hotels had a talent show, and if you won or had potential, it meant a record contract or potential contract with Rex Records.
