Scepter records started out as Tiara Records established in 1959 by
a then “unsuspecting” housewife Florence Greenberg. The label operated
out of the famous “Brill Building” in New York with a talent roster comprising
of The Shirelles, Dionne Warwick, B. J. Thomas among others and Hal David
& Burt Bacharach as staff songwriters and producers.
Scepter in Australia didn’t see the light of day until 1966 after Festival acquired the distribution rights. Prior to that Scepter material popped up on various labels such as HMV, Top Rank and Philips where the Scepter name gained prominence with “Recording Scepter” under the Philips logo (see above). Festival lost the rights when the US label was sold, then went briefly to Astor with a yellowish multicolour design, then discontinued when the label folded in 1976. Scepter also had offshoot labels, Wand & Roadshow, both issued by Astor at sometime. |
