| Spin
records was born originally as Everybody’s records as a cross-promotional
exercise between the “Everybody’s” teen magazine and Spin records. However
only 3 singles were released on the Everybody’s imprint owing to a dispute
between managements of magazine & record divisions legal decision dictated
that Everybody’s record label be discontinued. Early 1966, the label inverted
to the SPIN label after the production company name but retained the original
EK prefix. The strange thing was that the record co. and magazine was owned
by the same people (Sir Frank Packer –owner of consolidated press and Harry
M. Miller – personal manager and promoter).
The label was liquidated in mid 1974, the entire catalogue was purchased by Festival Records. Among it’s artist output were The Bee Gees owing to a deal with Robert Stigwood to release English recordings made with RSO. Earlier Australian Bee Gees recordings were released on Leedon & Spin. The label was later revived by Festival for the release of a series of re-issue CD’s and was cancelled a short time later in a cost-cutting move by Festival. The Spin catalogue was then purchased by Warner Brothers. Spin was distributed by Festival. |
