Another
of Melbourne’s earliest “microgroove” independent labels, possibly the
first, was one of the first to release microgroove LP records. As basic
as they were, some of the early recordings were of “live” dances using
wire recorders. Spotlight was set up in 1956 in the Melbourne suburb of
Thornbury by Cyril Stevens who owned a recording studio, and prided himself
in “inventing” new and better recording processes, such as Super Sound.
Some of his recordings were quite good for their time. The label issued
a wide range of music, mostly popular music of the day all by local artists.
Spotlight singles are outrageously rare, unlike the LP’s. You still find these in junk shops. |
