Virgin Records was started in 1970 by (Sir) Richard Branson as a record
shop. Virgin has since progressed to shops, credit cards, recording studios,
railways, airline and even space travel.
Australia first heard of Virgin and Branson in 1972 with Mike Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells” LP, at that time only available as an import with no distribution. Popularity demanded that a local record company issue the record, helped by the film “The Exorcist” where it featured as the theme. Distribution rights were won by Festival, followed by a string of Mike Oldfield records. Distribution taken over by CBS in 1980. Later, after a transition period where CBS & EMI both issued Virgin, the label finally went to EMI. |
