Chisa Productions was started in 1966 by Hugh Masekela (former husband of Miriam Makeba). It started with "Chisa Productions" designation on UNI and Revue labels (both owned by  MCA), where Masekela and his business partner, producer Stewart Levine, released a series of records.
Chisa Record was formed in 1968, later to be a subsidiary of Motown records.
